The Power of Forgiveness

The imperfection of man manifests in his day-to-day interpersonal relationship with others. In fact, it is no brainer that mere mortals will offend, either in words or actions. Forgiveness is key to peaceful co-existence; which is a precursor to progress, growth and development of any organization. Sadly, the devil is using the scourge of unforgiveness to attack the unity of the church and family.

Forgiveness is so powerful that it is a major requirement for one’s prayer to be answered, as enshrined in the model for prayer: *“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors”* (Matt. 6:12). ‘Debts’ in this context refers to owing people apologies or restitution, resulting from offences committed against them. The scripture stated further in verses 14 and 15, that: God will only forgive us of our sins when we forgive others of their sins. Unforgiving attitude is commonly found among the present day believers as well as some elderly Christians, and this is hampering the move of God. A lot of prayers are not answered because, brethren refused to forgive one another. Worship, praises and services rendered unto God in an atmosphere of unforgiveness are rarely acceptable unto God. In Matthew 5:23-24, Jesus Christ said: *“Therefore, if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.”* Unforgiveness seems little, but I tell you that it is a serious sin before God. You hinder your access to God and grace by refusing to forgive others! Due to the imperfect nature of human being, we sometimes get angry when offended; but we must always forgive. Jesus Christ spoke on the need to forgive freely and expressly at all times, when offended (Matt. 18:21-22). In Ephesians 4:26, Apostle Paul admonished the church at Ephesus about the management of anger. He emphasized the need to forgive almost immediately, because the devil takes advantage of the delay in forgiving people. The early church enjoyed the power of forgiveness as they were always forgiving the sins of one another. They were united in purpose, plan, and practices, as they spoke with one voice. Beloved, let us understand the fact that we cannot reason, talk or act alike because we had different orientations. It is, therefore, very important to embrace forgiveness so that we can begin to experience God’s move more than ever before.

Friend, are you embittered against your brother, sister, spouse or family member? Has anyone offended you to the point of concluding that it cannot be settled on this earth? Just forgive, forget, and forge ahead. *SHALOM*
