When we think about Christmas, images of sparkling lights, decorated trees, wrapped gifts, new attires, and merriments often come to mind. While these traditions bring joy, the true meaning of Christmas is much deeper. It is a celebration of hope - a hope that was given to us through the birth of Jesus Christ.
Long before Jesus was born, God promised a Saviour who would rescue His people as prophesied by Prophet Isaiah: *“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”* (Isa. 9:6). For many centuries, people waited for this promise to be fulfilled, until that first *“Christmas night”*. Hope entered the world- as a baby lying in a manger, in the most unexpected way. Beloved, Jesus is the ultimate gift of hope. This hope is not just for eternity; it is for today and everyone. Through His birth, life, death, and resurrection, He brought salvation to the broken world. Like Prophet Isaiah, Apostle John also remarked about Jesus being a gift: *“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life”* (Jn. 3:16).
Christmas is a time to reflect on the incredible hope we have in Christ. It is not about the gifts of hampers, but the gift of God’s love that brings salvation and changes everything. When we focus on Jesus, we are reminded that hope is not dependent on our circumstances – it is anchored on Him. As Romans 15:13 says: *“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”* This is the hope we celebrate at Christmas: a hope that fills our hearts and overflows into the lives of those around us. Just as God shared His gift of hope with us, we are called to share it with others. Whether it is through a kind word, a thoughtful act, or simply being present for someone in need, we can reflect God’s love. This Christmas, take time to share the hope of Jesus with someone. It might be as simple as inviting a neighbour to church, offering encouragement to a friend, or reminding your family of why we celebrate.
Christmas is more than a holiday – it is a reminder of the hope we have in Christ. This hope is the foundation of our faith, the anchor in our storms, and the light that guides us. May this Christmas fill your heart with joy, peace, and the unshakable hope that come from knowing Jesus. Merry Christmas in advance to the household of Cedar, home and abroad. *SHALOM*
