Have you ever wondered what will happen when Jesus returns? The Bible speaks about a mysterious, but an exciting event called the Rapture – when believers will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. It should be anticipated by every believer. Interestingly, many people are curious about it. What does rapture mean, and why is it so important to the Christians?
The etymology of the term ‘Rapture’ comes from the Latin word rapturo, meaning to seize or to carry off. The event is succinctly described in the scripture thus: *“For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever”* (1Thess. 4:16-17). This verse paints a vivid picture of Christ’s imminent return for His followers. Those who have died in Christ will rise first, while those who are still alive will be caught up with them. Imagine being in the middle of your daily routine, and in the blink of an eye, you suddenly disappear! Rapture is the earnest expectation of every true believer- a fulfilment of the promise that we will be with the Lord forever; leaving behind the troubles of this world.
The gospel truth is that no one knows exactly when the Rapture will take place. Jesus Himself said: *“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father”* (Matt. 24:36). This unknown timing can feel unsettling, but it is also a call to be prepared, living each day as though Jesus could return at any moment. It is a challenge to live every moment with eternity in mind. The emotional feeling is better painted like waiting for a surprise visit from a beloved friend or lover. You do not know when s/he will knock on your door, but you stay ready because you do not want to miss that joyful moment. In the same way, Jesus’ return is something we should eagerly anticipate, and stay spiritually awake; living a life that reflects our faith and hope. The Rapture is not something to fear – it is a source of comfort and hope. In John 14:2-3, Jesus tells His disciples: *“My Father’s house has many rooms... I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”* Just like a groom coming back for his bride, Jesus is preparing a place for us, and He will return to take us to be with Him. How well are you really prepared for His coming?
For believers, the Rapture is a reminder that this world is not our final home. Life can be tough, filled with struggles and heartache, but the Rapture promises a day when all the pains will be left behind. No more sickness, no more death, and no more sorrow in the eternity with Jesus Christ. A big question about the Rapture is: *Are you ready?* It is not about guessing the date or figuring out the signs. The real focus should be on how you live your life. God will help us to make it to the end. *(To be contd.)* SHALOM
