Perfection is the state or quality of a person or thing being without blemish, flawless or faultless, and excellent in every way. Can a man or woman be perfect? How can someone become perfect? The following scriptural text has an answer to the above questions. *“For in many things we offend all. If any man offends not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body”* (James 3:2).
The scripture elucidates on the need for self-control over the parts of our body. The tongue is not just an organ for tasting but a veritable means of communication, which must be tamed. As social beings, who must interact with one another, we sometimes offend ourselves in words. The offence in words, which may be either by omission or commission, actually shows our imperfection. A perfect man is somebody who is able to control his tongue and being thoughtful of his words. Do you ponder on what to say before you release those words? I pity some people who open their jaws carelessly, especially during angry moment, and spit fire. Words are like eggs, once they are dropped; they are broken without any remedy. Beware of what you say at the moment of anger! I admonish you to remain silent or even walk away, whenever you are angry. Words can make or mar, depending on the usage. Words can remove kolanut from the pocket, and words can draw sword from the sheath. Nabal, Abigail’s husband, would have become a dead man when he spoke foolishly about David. It took the wisdom and intervention of his wife, Abigail, to save his head.
According to Apostle James, bridling one’s tongue guarantees controlling the entire body - eyes, ears, heart, legs, hands, etc. If you want to become a perfect man, regulate and control what you say. Many obscene visuals are posted online from time to time via tik-tok, YouTube, X, Instagram and other social media platforms. Be intentional and selective about what you say everywhere you go! Be mindful of places you go and people you move around with, and audit your friendship list. Guard your heart jealously, for out of it are the issues of life. Rebuke every evil thought popping up from the inside of you, don’t process it further. Control your appetite for food and inordinate craving for sinful pleasures. Always remember Esau who mortgaged his birthright for a plate of food, and don’t forget Joseph who ran away for destiny fulfilment.
Friend, to become a perfect man, you need to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. Accept His Lordship today and be empowered to rule over self, sin and lust of the world. God bless you.
