The heart, in the medical world, is the muscular organ in humans and other animals which pumps blood through the circulatory system. Symbolically, the heart is the central or innermost part of something. It is also often used metaphorically, to represent the core or essence of a person, idea, or emotion.
Within the context of spirituality, our heart of worship is extremely important to connecting with divinity on a deeper, and genuine level than mere following religious rites and routines.
*“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth”* (Jn. 4:24). This verse, from John's gospel, emphasizes that true worship requires worshipping in spirit and truth with a sincere, authentic, and genuine heart, rather than just through physical rituals or outward manifestations. In many religious traditions, worship involves a lot of externalities: customs, routines, and ceremonies. These procedures look significant, yet occasionally might obscure the true purpose of devotion. Jesus said: *“This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me ...”* (Matt. 15:8-9). Friend, what is the proximity of your heart to God in the place of worship? Are you just connected with Him by mouth?
The goal of worship is to push past the surface level manifestations, and develop an intimate and in-depth relationship with God. The mind and heart are involved in true adoration, using our mind and spirit in a way that aligns us with God. Our sense of purpose and fulfilment in the spiritual journey can be experienced through this intimate relationship. Gratitude and humility are vital parts of the core of true worship! They serve as a pedestal to accessing God’s glorious presence and connecting to His gracious throne. By humbly approaching worship, we accept our limitations and make ourselves available for communion with our maker. *“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou will not despise”* (Ps. 51:17). Psalm 51 emphasizes the fact that God values a humble and repentant heart more than external offerings. It highlights the importance of inner sincerity and genuine repentance as essential elements of worship. No time or place is too exclusive to worship!
Let us endeavour to approach His throne with the attitude of gratitude, reverence, humility, and an open heart, which is the true heart of worship. May our worship be a sweet smelling aroma, and an acceptable sacrifice to God. Welcome to the month of July. Happy new month. *PEACE*
