As Christians, our calling by grace is not unto emptiness and vanities, but unto glorious inheritance which is the hope of our calling in Him. “… Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27b). Through Christ’s redemptive work, believers are children of God by adoption and joint-heirs with Christ. As a guarantee of this promised eternal inheritance, the Holy Spirit was given after the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. This gives us a blessed hope and helps us stay focused in our Christian pilgrimage.
Matthew 6:33 says “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” What are you seeking today? Are you just looking for money, career, fame, power, influence and other mundane or material things at the expense of God’s kingdom? The divine priority placed upon the kingdom cannot be over-emphasized! Unfortunately, many people have forgotten they are not on this planet forever, but just temporarily. The materialistic quest has blindfolded the present generation that they do the unthinkable. “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” (Mark 8:36). The inheritance of the believers to be sought is the kingdom of God and all its benefits. Today, the church has drifted from the primary focus of seeking God’s kingdom to the things promised as additional. It is not a sin for Christians to flourish and prosper in God, but not at the detriment of making it to heaven. As a child of God, whatever will make you miss the kingdom of God is not worth it at all! In the race of life, where is your thought? It is simply about the disposition of your heart. The scripture says in Matthew 6:21 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”. Don’t gather earthly treasure without having the thought of where you will spend your eternity. The story of the rich fool in the scripture paints a good picture of the life of anyone running after only material things (Luke 12:16-21). Remember that the rich man enjoyed on earth but was tormented in hell. On the other hand, Lazarus rested on the bosom of Abraham in heaven (Luke 16:19-30).
Having considered how glorious our inheritance in Christ is, where do you place it on life’s scale of preference? How much value do you attach to it above all the treasures this world has to offer? Don’t substitute the eternal and spiritual for the earthly and temporal! Hold tenaciously to this inheritance awaiting you at the end of your sojourn on earth. All things are yours in Christ. PEACE
