The Great Physician

A physician is a general term used for a medical doctor whose work is to maintain, promote, and restore health by studying, diagnosing, and treating injuries and diseases. However, it is only a sick fellow who needs the medical treatment of a physician. Little wonder, the Great Physician, Jesus Christ said: “They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick” (Matt. 9:12).

Notable among the medical procedures taken before treating a sick person include: observation, questioning, diagnosis, prognosis and prescription. It must be mentioned that the above procedure is majorly applicable to the physical ailment. However, there are other forms of illness which medical therapy cannot cure. For instance, one can be sick spiritually, emotionally, or psychologically. In this case, orthodox medicines cannot be applied. God, through Prophet Jeremiah, was asking three rhetorical questions when expounding on the different nature of sickness. “Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? Why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?” (Jer. 8:22). Historically, Gilead was known for its excellent apothecary services. It used to be a place where herbal ointments, oils, perfumes etc., were produced and used for healing and health purposes (Exo. 30:25). It was the most notable medical centre of excellence in the Old Testament. Therefore, in the Bible times, many physicians were making colossal amount of money in Gilead. In Jeremiah 8:22 earlier quoted, there was no recovery because the ailment was not of medical or physical origin.

The earthly ministry of Jesus Christ centered on healing the sick, delivering the oppressed as He was preaching the gospel of the Kingdom. Jesus Christ did not need any medical report from diagnostic laboratory before healing anyone brought to Him. Jesus Christ knows the nature of the sickness, and that is why He would simply address the source. Do you have any illness (medical or otherwise), diagnosed or not? Are you afraid of a medical report? I charge you today to come to Jesus at Calvary where your healing is perfected. Hear this fact: “… by whose stripes, you were healed” (1Pet. 2:24). I hereby declare your total healing NOW, in Jesus name!

Friend, it is God’s desire that you will be in good health (3Jn. 1:2). You need to appropriate the healing power in the blood of Jesus Christ, the Great Physician. You only need to first acknowledge and accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour. God bless you richly. SHALOM
