A Token of His Mercy

Contextually, a token means a sign, a proof, a mark or an evidence of something. In other words, it produces a concrete and tangible result. Mercy is the compassionate treatment of those in distress or need, especially when it is within one’s power to punish or harm them. The word “mercy” was derived from the Medieval Latin merced or merces, which means “price paid.” It has the element and connotation of forgiveness, benevolence and kindness or substitution.

Mercy is often considered as a legal term, which is used to seek pardon, leniency or clemency for an offender. In a difficult court case, it is common to hear a lawyer soliciting for his client that the judge should temper justice with mercy. Why do lawyers seek mercy from the judge? They know that the buck stops on the table of the judge! God has the ultimate power and prerogative of showing mercy to anyone He chooses. *“… and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy”* (Ex. 33:19). The decision to have mercy and the choice of whom to show mercy belongs to God. Being merciful by nature, He reserves the right to be gracious and have mercy on people. David understood this attribute of God, and he was always asking for mercy. During the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ, He had mercy upon an array of people. Notable among these people was the blind Bartimaeus, who defied all odds and cried unto Jesus for mercy. *“And he cried, saying, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me”* (Lk. 18:38). Bartimaeus was not only blind; but he was also a poor, helpless and hopeless beggar. Nevertheless, he was sensitive and resilient enough to attract the attention of Jesus. Based on chances, he knew that a blind man was the least to be noticed among the huge crowd. However, he understood the workings of divine mercy, he therefore shouted on top of his voice. Immediately, he obtained a token of His mercy, and received his sight. Beloved, mercy answers every issue of life that seems to defy solution. When a situation appears difficult, cry for a token of God’s mercy and it will show up! Divine mercy will speak over your life and family in Jesus mighty name.

Friend, no matter how terrible your sins may seem, God will accept you as you repent of your sinful ways and accept the Lordship of Jesus Christ. *“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy”* (Ps. 103:8). Accept Him today and become a recipient of His mercy. May the echoes of mercy be perpetually heard in your situation in Jesus name. PEACE
