The Great Shepherd II

Last week, we defined who a shepherd is, and discussed some of his functions and responsibilities to the sheep. We mentioned the two dimensions of shepherding (physical and spiritual) by Jesus, the great and good shepherd, who did not only care for His sheep, but also laid down His life. We shall be concluding this piece today as we discuss more of the benefits highlighted by David. *“He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake”* (Ps. 23:3).

God is the only restorer of the souls of men! Have you lost time, opportunity or resources? He is able to restore them if He is your shepherd. Are you emotionally shattered or heart-broken? Release yourself unto the Great Shepherd for the healing and restoration of your soul. He will comfort you in your time of distress. Physicians have no prescription for anyone that is heart-broken and pharmacists have no drug for emotional issues, but the Great Shepherd is able to deal with everything you might be going through. He is also able to lead you in the path of righteousness. Today, many people are going the wrong path, because they lack focus and direction. The Great Shepherd will lead you in the path of righteousness because of His name. Moreover, He does not want you to fall, fail or falter in the journey of life. The Sun of Righteousness will perpetually shine on your path when you stay with Him as your Shepherd. *“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me”* (Ps. 23:4). David understood that the work of a shepherd is very dangerous and risky, but he was bold because God’s presence was always with him. In the midst of insecurity and confusion in the world and our nation today, you need to run to the Great Shepherd for protection and direction. You need to constantly be with God and His presence will always be with you. The shepherd’s staff has two ends - the big end is used for beating any erring sheep, while the thin end is used for directing them. The word of God was performing a dual function of correcting and comforting David. You also need His word!

Friend, you need to be identified with the Great Shepherd who said *“I am the good shepherd, and I know my sheep, and am known of mine”* (Jn. 10:14). He must know you as one of His flock of sheep. Do you really know the Great Shepherd? If not, yield your heart to Him today. God bless you richly *(Concluded)*. *SHALOM*
