Birthright can be defined as a particular right of possession or the privilege a person has from birth. For instance, in the traditional African society, the eldest son has some privileges simply by being the first in the family. However, everyone born into a family has the right to enjoy certain privileges, by the virtue of his or her birth into the family.
In the Old Testament, every first male child was entitled to paternal blessings, which would be pronounced on him before the demise of his father. The story of Esau and Jacob, the twin brothers, born into the family of Isaac and Rebecca, readily comes to mind. By tradition, Esau, who came out first, was supposed to receive their father’s blessings but lost it to Jacob for a plate of food. Eventually, Jacob was divinely favoured or preferred to receive the fatherly blessings and was assisted by Rebecca, their mother. This means that one can lose his/her birthright due to carelessness or ignorance. In Mark 7:25-30, the Syrophenician woman and a Greek, knew she did not have any right to tell Jesus to heal her daughter. Nevertheless, she besought Jesus to cast forth the devil out of her daughter. *“But Jesus said unto her, let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it unto dogs”* (Mk. 7:27).
The woman’s incredible response to Jesus Christ, in the next verse, spurred Him to healing her daughter. What a well thought answer given by the woman! *“… Yes Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs”* (Mk. 7:28). In fact, the healing miracle was premised on that statement of faith. That was why Jesus said unto the woman: *“For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter”* (Mk. 7:29). Today, we often claim the Abrahamic blessings by virtue of being connected to father Abraham by faith. Many contemporary Christians are, however, oblivious of their birthrights in Christ. That is why the devil uses this ignorance to afflict, oppress and attack a lot of believers with various sicknesses and diseases. Friend, may I inform you that part of your birthright in Christ is supernatural healing. Jesus has paid for your deliverance from the power of sin and sickness. You now have a divine inheritance and insurance in Jesus!
Beloved, the birthright is based on a covenant relationship with Jesus Christ. It is meant for those who are within the perimeter fence of salvation. You need to be within the premises of faith before you can have access to divine promises. Accept the Lordship of Christ today, and enjoy the dividends of His birthright. *PEACE*
