Making Impact - Part 3

In part two of this series, we X-rayed the life of a young man called Joseph, who impacted his generation in policy formulation for the entire nation of Egypt. Some of the qualities that made him a voice to reckon with were identified in the exposition. Joseph had fear of God, self-control and he was highly disciplined and focused, against all odds. Today, we shall continue the series by considering the life of another bible character, Gideon.

The book of Judges chapter 6 gives account of the affliction and oppression meted out on the Israelites by the people of Midian. For good seven years, they were tormented by the Midianites, Amalekites and the people of the East. The people of Israel were so victimized to the extent that they were hiding in the dens, caves and strongholds which are in the mountains. The Bible says they were impoverished because of the Midianites (Judges 6:6). Gideon, the son of Joash the Abiezrite was threshing wheat in the winepress, in order to hide it from the Midianites, when the Angel of God appeared to him under the terebinth tree (Judges 6:11). The assignment given to Gideon was to be the saviour and deliverer of the Israelites from the hands of their oppressors. However, despite the angelic assurance of God’s presence with Gideon, he was yet doubting, asking questions and giving Him flimsy excuses. Hear him out “… O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” (Judges 6:15). God saw a man of valour in Gideon but he did not see himself in that image. He was considering his family background and lineage. No, God does not work that way! He lifts man out of a miry clay, washes him and makes him sit among the princes of this world. The truth is that if you want to make impact in any endeavour, you must see yourself exactly the way God sees or calls you. 1 Peter 2:9, says “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation and His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

Beloved, your family background, social or academic status cannot determine the level of influence and impact you can make in life. Your creator has good thought towards you and He will give you the expected end (Jer.11:29). Don’t give in to mediocrity! Stay focused. (To be contd.)
